Move to Zambia

Those of you who read this blog occasionally (or even frequently) may notice that I have changed the title at the top of the page. The reason for this change is that on Monday I will be leaving the Land of a Thousand Hills. The organization with which I work also has projects in three cities in Zambia and has requested that I spend the next few months in Lusaka, the capital city of the country. So, since I plan to continue to keep this blog updated, "In the Land of a Thousand Hills" no longer seemed like an appropriate title.

I have absolutely loved my time in Rwanda and will greatly miss the people, the landscape and the daily life of this place that has become my home. However, I look forward to the adventures and lessons that await in southern Africa, and I know that it will not be long before I return to east Africa.

Happy hour

Each Thursday night we plan "happy hour" at a different bar or restaurant in Kigali. Some nights there are only six of us and some nights there are almost twenty; some nights the location is a local hole-in-the-wall and some nights it is a popular expatriate restaurant or hotel; some nights we meet for an hour and some nights we extend the night to include dinner and several hours of good company. However the night may be, it is always one of my favorites and a wonderful way to end a busy week.

Kimironko Market

I think I've mentioned the Kimironko Market several times in previous posts, and this weekend when we were there, one of my friends took several pictures while we were in the fruit and vegetable section, so I thought I'd post them to give some idea of what the market is like.

Talent show

If I ever wondered what a talent show in Rwanda would be like, now I know. The Sky Hotel, which is very close to where I live, has a talent show every weekend where, as I learned last night, Rwandans come to practice their lip-syncing and dancing skills. It was one of the strangest and funniest things I've ever seen, so I took some short videos of several of the acts.
