We have quite a few animals at NAMRU-3 and most of them serve a particular purpose. For example, we keep sheep to provide blood for making agar plates to culture microorganisms and ferrets and gerbils for testing vaccines. But there are a couple animals at NAMRU-3 for no apparent reason. As far as I can tell, they just hang out in cages next to the parking lot!
We have a turkey,
an owl,
and two crocodiles - Drs. Nefertiti and Cornwallis!
